Peace, Love and Rock and Roll: A Celebration of Flower Power, and the Good Old Hippie Days
Peace, Love and Rock and Roll:
"...we condemned them, our children, for seeking a different future. We hated them for their flowers, for their love, and for their unmistakable rejection of every hideous, mistaken compromise that we had made throughout our hollow, money-bitten, frightened, adult lives." - June Jordan
Flower power, psychedelic rock and roll, peace, love and good vibrations, that’s
Hippies have received a lot of bad press. They’ve been hated and branded as alcoholics, drug addicts, promiscuous bums and the like but ultimately they stood for peace, love and freedom. Being a hippie was a matter of accepting a belief system which transcends the social, political, and moral norms of any established society. It was their ambition to abolish any kind of hierarchy so as to make sure that people are not judged by their race, gender, religion or social class. They believed that the only way to establish peace in the world was through love and tolerance. They thought the society's biggest mistake was reducing the judgment of people to narrow definitions and so it was important to bring virtue and humanity into the system in order to broaden minds. All these ideas are what I love about these hippies. It’s so easy to judge them for their looks, their scruffy lifestyle but in the end, they’re all just appearances. The hippie movement had an undeniable merit: they represented the most authentic reaction against the imperialism and repression of ethnic minorities.
And then there was the music. Who could ever forget the Woodstock of ’69, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, John and Yoko, and so many more whose music embodied ideals of peace, love, freedom and unity, music so powerful that it reached out to your heart, and pushed you to open your mind and soul in order to give way to new ideas, new possibilities.
Such is the power of music, for some, it’s just a couple of notes carefully arranged to make a beautiful sound but for a select few, it embodies something more. It can represent love, sorrow, or hope. Music has a way of communicating to the world, of bringing people together. And it’s amazing to see just how the music of the 60’s still lives on and how it still communicates even to the generation of today. Lennon, Hendrix, Morrison, Dylan they’ve become legends and the words from their songs continue to echo from generation to generation.
It’s hard to think of the sixties and not think about all these: flower power, psychedelic music and these hippies and their ideals. After four decades, I’d like to believe that their music and ideals still lives on and has spread throughout different cultures. I’d like to believe that our generation today still believes in equality, love, freedom and unity. That we still believe that people should not be judged by their looks, sexual orientation, religion or social class. I’d like to believe that people still choose to stand for something they firmly believe in even if it means going against social norms. It is still a chaotic world, but in such chaos, I’d like to think that we can still find a glimmer of hope, knowing that there are still people out there who believe in all that is good in mankind. In the words of the great John Lennon, “Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can, no need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man. Imagine all the people sharing all the world."

Love is Psychedelic
Here I was, being immersed by the grooves, thinking dearly about you on the dance-floor. Suddenly, a magical sensation was created in me.
Everytime I would receive the groovy, phat sound in my body, I felt like my sweet feelings for you grew bigger and bigger within me.
Then, this foxy chick finally got completely out of me, turned out to be a foot long shining chunk of light, and it was just floating in front of me.
In the next moment, this foxy chick, well I mean this chunk of my love for you, started flying up to the ceiling slowly, then smashed into the mirror-ball hanging there.
Then it fell apart with its intense flash, it became thousands millions of dots of lights, expanding to all over the place, and then started spinning around with the music.
I can't believe that my sweetest love for you is taking over the whole dance- floor now.
But, the next thing I knew, I got back to myself. Was it an illusion? Or was it real? Oh, by the way, I might have drank too much....
Here I was, being immersed myself by the grooves thinking dearly about you on the dance-floor. Again, the magical and strange sensation came into me.
Suddenly, you know, the sweet chunk of my love for you came out of me. What was the reason why? What was the reason why? Then, it just kept floating right in front of me again.
In the next moment, it sped up extremely fast, broke through the ceiling, and flew up higher and higher. It went over the stratosphere, then spreading out to the universe.
I was looking at this landscape ---- wow, I'd only seen it on T.V. or in some encyclopedia. And, this foxy chick was growing bigger and bigger, and then flying into the scared darkness.
It grazed Mars, made a circle around Jupiter, slid over a hoop of Saturn, and by the time it reached to Uranus and Pluto, it had grown into remarkably big, then crashed to Neptune. With a dramatic flash, innumerable amounts of stars were born in a jet-black darkness, and then the whole universe started spinning around just like a planetarium.
God! How beautiful! Oh, how divine! I can't believe that my sweetest love for you is taking over the whole universe now.... I am sure the shine of the stars would take me to the height of happiness. I was deeply deeply deeply touched.... I almost started crying.... Oh, what a beautiful moment!
But then again, I came back to myself. Here I was, dancing at the center of the dance-floor. That mirror-ball was spinning around as always, and the dots of lights were making beautiful patterns in the air.
What was what I saw just a while ago? Was I seeing an illusion? Was I being real? I just don't know.
Well, I must have drank too much anyway. You see, that nice and smooth groove that the DJ was playing must have gotten more incredible because of my drunkenness.
But what I can say for sure is that sometimes love could make you experience something very mysterious. And no matter what, I am truly in love with you. Love is psychedelic. Love always takes my body and soul to a paradise. Love is psychedelic. Love is psychedelic....
